What To Wear For Your Engagement Session

When it comes to picking out what to wear for your engagement session, it may feel a bit daunting! There are so many different styles and it can be overwhelming narrowing it down. As an engagement photographer, I’ve worked with hundreds of couples for their sessions and have a few tricks up my sleeve to help make sure you look and feel your best going into your engagement session. Take a look!

BE YOURSELF

Your engagement photos are about you and your future spouse- so wear something that feels right to you! If you don’t feel comfortable dressing super formal, then you don’t have to. Wear colors and styles that flatter you and your fiancé. We’re human, so it’s natural to feel insecure in front of the camera. The best way to avoid this is to be comfortable in your own skin.

CONSIDER YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Use the location of your session to your advantage! If you are doing an at home engagement session, wear cozy elevated classics. If you’re going to be hiking to get to the perfect spot, wear the appropriate shoes. Think about the season you are going to be in for your session and make sure you have on the right amount of layers depending on how hot or cold it will be. Another thing to keep in mind is that your location will impact how colors show up. Bright, bold colors like red will stand out in a forest environment. Neutrals look chic against a downtown city vibe. Bright colors work well when you are going to be in an area with a lot of urban murals and art. Picking your location and season will have a huge impact on what outfits work best.

SHOP YOUR CLOSET

The best tip I can give you for finding outfits that fit you best is to shop your own closet! You don’t have to go out and spend a ton of money on new clothes if you don’t want to. Often times, the perfect look is buried in your closet already. If anything, spruce up your favorite outfit with some new accessories. Jewelry, hats, scarves, or a new jacket can make all the difference in a look you already love. Also consider texture when planning your looks. Faux fur or sequins can add some depth and a more “boujee” feel to your look without needing a full ballgown or suit. Be sure to avoid loud patterns as to not distract from your beautiful faces!

Lastly, when planning your outfits with your partner, make sure to be complimentary and not identical. You should have some contrast between the two of you so that you coordinate but don’t look like twins (unless that’s the look you’re going for!).

Of course remember that these are just tips. At the end of the day, it’s important to do what you feel is like you- after all, these are your photos! As long as you both feel comfortable and in love, that will shine through in your photos.
